Detective Inspector Nell Harrow has 25 files on her desk and one locked mill door. Each file is a different kind of puzzle: ciphers, Morse code, letter sudoku, word searches with a hidden message, logic grids, alibi tables, a map route, a timeline, spot the difference and more. Solve a file and it reveals one fact. The difficulty climbs from 1 to 5, two hints per file and complete answers wait at the back, and when all 25 facts are in your notebook you fill in the Close the case form and name the killer.

This is a puzzle book with a story. Instead of 25 unrelated puzzles, every page is one file from a single murder investigation in the mill town of Ravenmoor. You solve the file, and the answer tells you one fact: when the clock stopped, who had a key, which alibi is false.

The puzzle types change from page to page. You will decode a number cipher, read a mirror-written note, unscramble anagrams, crack a number lock, fill a letter sudoku, follow a route on a town map, compare two pictures, work through logic grids and alibi tables, and finish with a keyword cipher. Nothing needs the internet or scissors, and no puzzle depends on colour.

At the end a one-page form asks seven questions and each one tells you which files hold the answer. Fill it in from your facts, write the name of the killer, then turn to the verdict page to check.

Questions

How long does the whole book take?

Most players need three to five hours spread over several sittings. The early files take a few minutes each; the last five can take twenty minutes or more.

Can I print it in black and white?

Yes. Use the Printer-Friendly Edition: white pages, thin lines and dark text. No puzzle depends on colour in either edition.

Does it work on a tablet?

Yes. The Colour Edition has a clickable contents page and wide margins; open it in any PDF app that lets you draw with a stylus or finger.

What age is it for?

Ages 12 and up. It is a cosy mystery: no gore, no violence on the page. Younger solvers may want help with the last few files.

Are the puzzles all different?

There are 15 puzzle types across the 25 files, so no type appears more than three times, and the second appearance is always harder than the first.

What if I get stuck?

Every file has two hints at the back, written so that the first one gives a nudge and the second one almost gives it away. Full answers and the solved verdict follow.

Is this a group game or a solo book?

It is written for one solver or a pair sharing one copy. Each purchase is for one household.

Letter or A4?

Both are in the zip. Print at 100 percent with no scaling and the pages fit either paper.
