On 1 December the valley road closes under the snow and a guest is found dead in the reading room of the Holly and Lantern Inn. Five hundred people passed the Christmas Fair gate that day, and one of them handed him the cup. Every morning until Christmas Eve, Detective Sergeant Ada Winterbourne leaves you a coded note. Solve the day's puzzle, read the clue, cross names off the register. On 24 December exactly one name is left.

This is a puzzle book shaped like an advent calendar. Instead of chocolate behind a door, each day has one page with one puzzle: a cipher, a logic grid, a word search, a maze on the village map, a receipt to add up, two pictures to compare, a torn note to reassemble. The puzzles are different every day and get a little harder as the month goes on, with bigger ones on the Sundays.

What makes it a mystery is the register. At the front of the book are 500 people who visited the Hollybrook Christmas Fair on the day of the murder, each with an age, a home street, a stall or role, an arrival time, the gift they bought, their coat colour and a ticket number. Every solved puzzle gives you a clue such as 'the killer arrived after 10:15' or 'the killer did not buy a teapot', and every clue lets you cross more rows off. Each day page tells you how many names should be left, so you always know you are on track.

By Christmas Eve one name remains. A sealed page at the back explains who did it, how and why, in a cosy village-mystery tone with nothing graphic. You can play alone, as a couple or as a family: adults solve the puzzle, children hunt the register.

Questions

How long does each day take?

Ten to twenty minutes. The three Sunday puzzles are bigger and can take up to twenty-five.

Do I have to print the whole book?

No. Print the register and the tracker once, then the day pages as you go. Day 23 is a cut-out sheet and should be printed single-sided. On a tablet you need not print anything.

Is it suitable for children?

The puzzles are written for ages 12 and up. The story is a gentle village mystery with no graphic content, and younger children enjoy crossing names off the register once the clue is known.

What if I get a puzzle wrong?

Every day page says how many names should remain after that day. If your count differs, go back over the register before the next day. Two hints and the full answer for every day are at the back.

Does it work in black and white?

Yes. The Printer-Friendly Edition has white pages and dark text, and no puzzle depends on colour; coat colours in the register are written as words.

Can I play it with a group?

Yes. One person reads the note, everyone solves, and the register hunt is shared. It also works as a daily family ritual over breakfast.

Is there only one possible answer?

Yes. Every puzzle has a single solution and the clue chain leaves exactly one person on the register on Christmas Eve; the counts are checked by the build before release.

Can I play it again or give it to someone else?

The file is for your own household. Buy a second copy to give as a gift; recipients can print it fresh.
