Cold Case Games Online: How They Work and Where to Play Free

Forgotten Mystery · · 8 min read

Quick answer: Cold case games online give you a closed murder file (reports, statements, photos, phone records) and ask you to find what the original investigators missed, then name the killer. You can play them in a browser, on your phone as a mobile app, or print a cold case file and solve it at the kitchen table, and several of them let you start for free.

A made-up but familiar evening: It is 10 p.m. and you only meant to look at the first page. The file says the death was ruled an accident in 1979. Forty minutes later you have a notepad covered in times, two witness statements that cannot both be true, and a growing suspicion about the person who "found" the body. You still have one accusation left, and you are not going to waste it.

Key takeaways

  • A cold case game is a detective game built around an old, unsolved or wrongly closed case file. You read evidence, not dialogue trees.
  • There are three main formats: browser case files, phone-based cases and printable case files. A fourth, live multiplayer, lets friends investigate the same file together.
  • Good cold case games have fair clues, a few red herrings, a clear question to answer and a real cost for guessing wrong.
  • Online cases usually take 20 to 45 minutes; printable case files take an evening.
  • You can try every format for free before paying for anything.

What is a cold case game?

In real police work, a cold case is an investigation that went quiet without a solid answer. A cold case game borrows that idea: the crime is over, the witnesses have already given their statements, and the official verdict is often "accident" or "unknown." Your job is to reopen the file.

That makes the format different from most detective games. You do not walk around a 3D crime scene or chat with characters who react to your choices. You read documents: an autopsy summary, a patrol officer's notes, a bar receipt with a timestamp, a text message sent at the wrong time. The puzzle is hidden in the gaps between them.

If you want a wider overview of detective games in general (visual novels, investigation simulators, co-op games), see our list of the best online detective games. This guide stays with the cold case format itself.

The formats: where cold case games live

1. Browser case files

The simplest way to play cold case games online. You open a case in your browser, on a laptop, tablet or phone, and move through the evidence screen by screen. Good ones are structured so you meet the evidence in a sensible order: the case summary first, then the scene, then the people.

Our own online cases work this way. One case is free and starts right away with no sign-up and no credit card; a membership ($12.49 per month or $42 per year) unlocks the rest. Cases range from Easy to Hard and take about 20 to 45 minutes.

How we build them: each online case runs in seven stages (case file, crime scene, witness statements, forensic evidence, intercepted messages, interrogations, accusation), and you get one accusation, so every clue matters.

2. Phone-based cold cases

A newer twist: the whole case lives inside one phone. Instead of a folder of reports, you scroll through the victim's messages, photos and notes, the way a detective would after unlocking a seized device. It feels personal and a little uncomfortable, which is exactly the point.

Our app Cold Crime: Murder Mystery (also on Google Play) is built on this idea: you solve each case using only the victim's phone, and all cases are free. Some end in murder, others in betrayal, so you cannot assume the worst from the first message.

3. Printable cold case files

Some people want paper. A printable case file is a PDF you print and spread across a table: police reports, statements, receipts, maps and photos, with sealed envelopes that confirm your reasoning or hold the solution. Nothing is highlighted, and some of the documents are red herrings.

Our printable cold case files are for 1 to 6 players, take 2 to 3 hours and suit ages 16 and up. Each one asks a series of questions that build on each other, and you open the next envelope only when your group agrees on an answer. The paid cases are $9.99 each as a one-time download, in a full-color edition and a printer-friendly edition.

4. Live multiplayer cold cases

Playing with friends who are not in the same room works best when everyone can read the evidence on their own screen and talk it through at the same time. We run two sister sites built for exactly that.

How to play a cold case game, step by step

The format changes, but the method does not. This is the routine that works for most players.

  1. Read the summary twice. Note what the official conclusion was and what question the case asks you to answer. "Who killed her?" and "Was it really an accident?" lead you to read the same file differently.
  2. Build a timeline. Write every time you find on one sheet: when the victim was last seen, when a call was made, when a door log shows someone entering. Most cold cases break on a time that does not fit.
  3. Make a suspect table. For each person: motive, opportunity, alibi, and who confirms that alibi. An alibi confirmed only by another suspect is weak.
  4. Look for contradictions, not confessions. Nobody in a good case file says "I did it." Instead, one statement mentions rain on a night the weather report says was dry.
  5. Test your theory against every document. If one piece of evidence does not fit, either it is a red herring or your theory is wrong. Find out which before you accuse.
  6. Accuse once, with reasons. Many games give you a single accusation. Treat it like a courtroom: be ready to say why.

For a deeper look at the reasoning side, our guide to cold case investigation techniques walks through methods like timeline analysis and alibi checking.

What makes a good cold case game?

Fair clues

Everything you need to solve the case should be in the file. If the answer depends on a fact the game never shows you, it is not a mystery; it is a guess. After the reveal, you should be able to look back and say, "It was right there."

Red herrings that make sense

A good red herring is a real-looking lead with an innocent explanation. A bad one is random noise. The best cases give several people a believable motive, so you have to eliminate them with evidence instead of instinct.

Documents that feel real

Receipts with tax lines, logs with odd formatting, statements written in different voices. When the documents look like they came from different people and places, you read them more carefully, and the case feels like work in a good way.

A cost for guessing

If you can click every suspect until one is right, there is no tension. One accusation, sealed envelopes or a final vote keeps you honest and makes the "aha" moment feel earned.

The right length for the format

A browser case should fit in one sitting. A printable file can take an evening, because spreading papers across a table is part of the fun. Watch out for cases that pad their length with documents that add nothing.

Playing cold case games with other people

Cold cases started as a solo hobby for many players, but they work well in groups because people notice different things. One person reads timestamps, another reads body language in a statement, a third keeps asking "but why would she lie about that?"

Where to start if you have never played

Start short and free. Play one browser case to learn the rhythm of reading evidence, or open the phone-based app and see if you like the feeling of going through someone's messages. If you enjoy the slow, paper-heavy side, move to a printable case file for a full evening. And if your friends keep asking what you are doing, set up a live session so they can join.

FAQ

Are there cold case games online for free?

Yes. Our first online case is free with no sign-up, and every case in the Cold Crime app is free. Printable case files are usually paid, so check each product page.

What is the difference between a cold case game and a murder mystery party?

In a cold case game everyone investigates the same evidence and nobody plays a character. In a murder mystery party each guest plays a suspect with secrets, and one of them is the killer.

How long does a cold case game take?

Our online cases take about 20 to 45 minutes. A printable cold case file takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on how many people are working on it.

Can I play cold case games with friends online?

Yes. ColdCaseOnline.com lets 2 to 8 players investigate a case file live together. You can also share a screen and play a browser case as a group.

Are cold case games based on real cases?

Ours are fictional. They are written to feel like real police files, with reports, statements and records, but the people and crimes are invented.

Do I need to download anything to play cold case games online?

No for browser cases: they run in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Phone-based cases need the app, and printable files need a printer.
